"Double-heading" is a railroad industry term that refers to the coupling (or joining) of two locomotives at the front of a train. The addition of the second locomotive adds pulling power, and this practice is extremely rare among steam tourist railroads today. However, modern freight railroads frequently place two or more diesel locomotives at the front of long freight trains to provide the required pulling power.
